Iran Israel War Live Updates: The conflict between Iran and Israel entered its fifth day, with continued strikes from both sides. While Iran launched a fresh wave of strikes on Israel, Jerusalem said it launched "extensive" strikes targeting missile and drone sites in western Iran. According to Iran's health ministry, Israeli attacks on the country have killed at least 224 people and injured more than 1,200 others. Meanwhile, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's office said that at least 24 people have been killed and 592 injured in Iranian attacks on Israel.

Iran's top army chief, Ali Shadmani, killed

Tnsions further flared up as the Israeli military on Tuesday said it killed Iran's top military commander, Ali Shadmani, in an overnight strike. The military termed him as the closest person to Iranian supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.

The military said in a statement that following a "sudden opportunity overnight, the (Israeli air force) struck a staffed command centre in the heart of Tehran and eliminated Ali Shadmani, the wartime Chief of Staff, the most senior military commander".

Shadmani had commanded both the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps and the Iranian armed forces.

US in Iran-Israel conflict

Amid escalating tensions, the White House said that US forces in the Middle East remained in a "defensive" posture.

US President Donald Trump said on Tuesday that he sought a “real end” to the conflict in Iran, adding that he might send his VP JD Vance and special envoy Steve Witkoff for negotiations. Later, he clarified that he was also “not in too much to negotiate” with Iran.

Israel said its sweeping assault on Iran’s top military leaders, uranium enrichment sites and nuclear scientists was necessary to prevent its longtime adversary from getting any closer to building an atomic weapon.

When did Israel attack Iran?

In a major campaign launched early Friday, Israeli fighter jets and drones have struck nuclear and military sites in Iran, also hitting residential areas and fuel depots.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said the Israeli strikes have set Iran’s nuclear program back a “very, very long time,” and told reporters he is in daily touch with Trump.

So far, Israel has targeted multiple Iranian nuclear program sites but has not been able to destroy Iran’s Fordo uranium enrichment facility.
